Children’s race was introduced in 1989. The race has been a great attraction to both the youth and adults in Arusha Municipality. For Mount Meru International Marathon, Children race is very important because apart from being healthy for the children it is also the best way to encourage them to be future marathon potentials. The race usually attracts about 350 - 400 youth both girls and boys.
In 1994 when the President of AIMS Mr. Hiroaki Chosa visited Arusha, Tanzania the race impressed him so much that he promised to support the race by donating sports gear. In the year 2000 August he made another visit and promised his continued support to the race. He ensured a contract between Mount Meru International Marathon Arusha and ASCIS was signed.
The race is specifically designed according to the age group. There are various age categories between the ages 13 to 17 years old.
From 1989 to 1995 the Mount Meru International Marathon enjoyed full sponsorship from Pepsi Cola Bottlers, Tanzania.
Later, the sponsorship has been partial from different companies namely Hoopoe Adventure Tours, Bakhressa Mult – Companies, Mohamed Enterprises and AIMS.
